My Hero Academia: You're Next Movie Review

With the highly anticipated conclusion of My Hero Academia's seventh season, fans were treated to an exhilarating, two-hour cinematic experience. My Hero Academia: You’re Next picks up after the chaotic villain outbreak, following Class 1-A as they confront a notorious crime syndicate, the Gollini Family, headed by the fearsome villain known as Dark Might. Packed with intense battles and emotional moments, this film expands on the series' narrative while delivering non-stop action. In this review, we’ll break down the movie’s key characters, plot developments, and standout moments, exploring how it ties into the broader My Hero Academia universe and what it offers to both new and longtime fans.

Voldo Gollini: Dark Might

Dark Might is the enigmatic and ruthless leader of the Gollini Family, a powerful crime syndicate that emerges as the central antagonist in My Hero Academia: You’re Next. With a quirk that allows him to manipulate shadows and harness immense physical strength, Dark Might become a formidable threat to Class 1-A. His dark charisma and tactical mind set him apart from previous villains, making him both a physical and psychological challenge for the heroes. As a former ally-turned-rival to All Might, Dark Might’s backstory introduces new layers of tension, exploring themes of betrayal, lost potential, and the fine line between heroism and villainy.
Dark Might’s role is pivotal to the movie’s narrative, as his presence not only challenges the students on a technical level but also forces them to grapple with the complexities of heroism. His personal vendetta against All Might heightens the stakes, creating emotional resonance and tying into the series’ overarching themes. The conflict with Dark Might pushes the students to their limits, compelling them to grow as both individuals and a team. His arc serves as a metaphor for the dangers of unchecked ambition, showing how even those with heroic potential can fall into darkness. The climactic battle with Dark Might highlights the importance of unity and perseverance, marking a key moment in the character development of several Class 1-A students.

Gollini Family

The Gollini Family is a notorious crime syndicate operating from the shadows, specializing in smuggling, black market dealings, and quirk-related weapons. Their influence stretches across cities, and they thrive on chaos in the wake of the villain outbreak. Under the leadership of Dark Might, the Gollini Family becomes a force of calculated brutality, using their resources and power to challenge both the Pro Heroes and Class 1-A. Each member of the family has a distinct quirk, making them a deadly collective threat. The family’s operations and structure resemble a twisted mirror image of hero agencies, with rigid loyalty and a code built around domination and fear.
The Gollini Family plays a crucial role in My Hero Academia: You’re Next, raising the stakes beyond individual villain encounters. Their coordinated attacks force the heroes to confront large-scale crime and corruption, bringing a new dimension to the story. Unlike previous villains motivated by ideology or personal grudges, the Gollini Family represents an organized, systemic evil—more difficult to dismantle and far-reaching in its consequences. Their complex structure also pushes the students of Class 1-A to work cohesively as a team, testing their abilities to strategize against multiple enemies. The film explores how the family manipulates public fear and exploits the heroes' weaknesses, driving home the message that heroism must also address crime at its roots. Their presence adds a layer of depth to the film, offering thrilling encounters while tying into larger questions about justice, power, and loyalty.

Giulio Gandini

Giulio is the loyal butler for the wealthy Scervino family. Originally hired to subdue and protect Anna Scervino's quirk, he ends up with another mission of putting an end to her life after she is kidnapped by the Gollini family. He ends up meeting Izuku Midoriya who changes his perspective on the dire situation. Giulio eventually decides to team up with the heroes to put an end to Dark Might and the Gollini Family and saving Anna. When it comes to enemies, he shows no mercy and will not backdown no matter the odds.
He plays an important role as his quirk Neutralization was the only thing stopping Anna's quirk from being used and going out of control. Unfortunately, after losing his arm, he becomes unable to use it and resorts to support items that replaces his right arm, eye and leg but helps him in battle. His loyalty to Anna drives everyone to save her and put an end to the villain's dark motives.

Anna Scervino

Anna Scervino is a central figure in My Hero Academia: You’re Next. She is from the wealthy Scervino family and possesses a very strong quirk. Anna's Quirk allows her to modify the Quirk of whoever is touching her, as long as the subject is compatible. It is able to boost the strength of Quirks in their current state, as well as grant new abilities to their users. If the person is incompatible, they will be met with a sharp stinging pain, temporarily subduing them. This ability of hers is always active and in turns always hurts her when its being used. This causes the head of her family to hire Giulio who is able to subdue her quirk with his own.
Anna plays an important role to the movie due to her quirk. Due to the capabilities of her quirk Dark Might captures and hold her hostage for his own benefit. The heroes of the story must now rescue her from Dark Might before he gets too powerful.

Final Review

The story takes place during the events of the villain outbreak. With new villains such as Dark Might, who was wrongly inspired by past number one hero All Might, and the Gollini Family, they set out to become the most powerful with the help of Anna's quirk. This causes the pro heroes, class 1-A, and Giulio to work together and defend off the new powerful threats. The animation along with the music makes the emotional scenes hit harder while also keeping you entertained. As a My Hero Academia fan you will definitely enjoy your time during this movie. For non anime fans this is still a great watch to introduce you into a new world. Final Score: 8/10!
